100 Yen Shops – All you need in one shop!

Hello from Tokyo!

Today I will talk about a very interesting souvenir shop in Japan. It’s the 100 yen shops! In Japanese, it’s called 100円ショップ (hyaku en shoppu).

100 yen shop is a kind of discount store which contains a variety of products for 100 Japanese yen for any product.

So any item in this shops costs only 100 yen (plus 8 yen as a consumption tax).

Sometimes there are 200 or 300 yen products in the same shop, and sometimes they sell small things such as candy or snacks in multiples of 2 or 3 for 100 yen, but the majority is 100 yen products.

There are thousands of 100 yen shops all over Japan with different sizes and locations from department stores to small corners in shopping malls or near from the metro stations.

What are the products or the items you can find there?

  • Tableware: Plates, rice and miso soup bowls, tea cups,  forks
  • Kitchenware: Kitchen knives, microwave containers, coffee filters, detergent, aluminum foil
  • Tools: Hammers, measuring tapes, pliers, screwdriver sets
  • Stationery: Boxes,  memo pads, pens, pins, calligraphy brushes
  • Beverages: soft drink cans, water bottles, juice cans and bottles
  • Foods: breads, sandwiches, snacks, ice cream, chips

The 100 yen shops can be divided into 4 big chains:
1 – Daiso (ダイソー)
2 – Can do (キャンドゥ)
3 – Shiruku (Silk)
4 – Lawson 100 yen

1 – Daiso (ダ イ ソ ー)

I think that Daiso is the leader of those chains , as there are more than 2000 daiso stores all over Japan. We can find it in the big squares and beside the major train stations. The variety of its products is making these shops a great source for travelers and residents on a budget.

One of the largest Daiso shops is located in the center of Tokyo, in Harajuku Takeshita shopping street, only a few minutes from Harajuku station. Rather than just a shop, it’s almost like a 100 yen department store, so you can find almost anything you need inside it.

2 – Can Do (キャンドゥ)

Can Do is the second largest 100 yen shop chains in Japan. The products are not very different from Daiso, only the maker (the company which produces the items) is different.

So if you don’t know the kinds of 100 yen shop, maybe you will not notice any difference.

3 – Silk (shiruku) in Japanese :

Shiruku, or “Silk”, seems to me like it is the smallest 100 Yen shops chain in Japan in terms of the number of stores.

You can find it in the shopping areas between a small shop and other shops. Like Daiso and Can Do above. the items are very similar to the other chains but the producer is different.

4 – Lawson 100 Yen:

The popular convenience store Lawson also has 100 yen stores. The main items they sell are beverages and foods, with all products being 100 yen. The brand name Lawson carries a certain level of trust, so you can shop with peace of mind.

An interesting thing to note – I heard that there is a famous 100 yen shop chain called SERIA, but I never saw its shops in Tokyo. So I will try to find it and post about my opinion in another blog.
