Internet sim in Japan

Hello everyone!

Many of you are planning to visit Japan in autumn. One thing that is important whether you are in Japan or in your country is internet connection. In Japan, free wifi is not very common. Maybe you can find some free wifi spots at the train stations or hotel but I would say you that it’s not very practical to rely on these free wifi spots.

What if you get lost in the middle of no where and there is no free wifi to use? ( ̄_ ̄)・

If you are traveling in group, buying or renting pocket wifi seems to be a reasonable choice. But don’t forget that that you are sharing the network, you can’t split up. You always have to be together in order to get internet access. If you happen to go to different shops, the chance of you getting lost is high.

Don’t worry, we have solution for you… Internet sim!

In Japan, you have to sign the contract to get a simcard from provider (thus you need credit card) but for travel sim, no registration needed. Just buy the simcard and follow the few steps below to set it up.

There are two types of simcards available.

  • 1GB  1 month  2600 yen
  • 2GB  3 month  4000 yen

Many people ask me if 1 GB capacity will be enough for one week trip in Japan, my answer would be “yes”.

Provider suggested that,

  • open new web page 3400 page
  • sending 204800 Line or Facebook messages
  • 280 map search
  • 30 mins skype call 580 times

I think it’s enough for a week and maybe even for 15 days (well, as long as you don’t watch youtube). However, if you think you are going to need more than 1GB , you can buy more credit from convenience stores. Just pick up this card and pay at the cashier.

  • Top up 500 MB 1500 yen
  • Top up 2 GB 3000 Yen

  1. Great post ! This is very good news.
IIJ seems to be the biggest internet provider in Japan and has the strongest signal.
Would you mind telling me if this SIM card is available in all sizes (nano or micro) ?
And can we use this card on SIM-free phones only ?
    Thank you very much.

    1. Both Nano and micro sim is available. However, this is a data sim, you can’t use it for voice call.

I believe your phone has to be sim-free to be able to use any simcard beside your own provider.
