The sakura viewing season is in full swing and and here is another TIC blog post in our 2016 Cherry Blossom special.
This time, I will be talking about Sendai! Sendai is the capital of Miyagi Prefecture and it is the largest city in the Tohoku region.
If you haven’t read our previous posts, check them out here:
Where is Sendai?
Sendai is famous for its yearly Tanabata Festival, the biggest Tanabata festival in Japan. Also, “gyuutan”, grilled beef tongue, originated in Sendai.
Another one of Sendai’s great charms is the Ogawara Cherry Blossom Festival!
This year’s festival will be held from April 7 until April 21 and it is definitely not to be missed if you are in the area!
There are 8 km of over 1,200 trees lining the banks of the Shiroishi river;)
It is truly a sight to behold when the flowers are in full bloom, especially against the backdrop of snow capped mountains ヽ(ﾟｰﾟ*ヽ)ヽ(*ﾟｰﾟ*)ﾉ(ﾉ*ﾟｰﾟ)ﾉ
The festival is at Funaoka Castle Park which is located atop a hill. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the top along a flower lined path. This is where you get the best breathtaking views. There is also a trolley available that takes you to the park from the parking lot for ￥500 round trip.
Also, don’t miss the night sakura from 18:00-22:00 when the trees will be beautifully lit up. It is truly spectacular!
You can even enjoy the sakura from the water on the Sakura houseboat!
The 2.3 km course takes about 20 minutes to complete and it will give you a totally different perspective of the gorgeous cherry blossoms.
There will even be these delicious and good-looking bentos sold at the venue!
Other festival fare will also be sold along with some specialties such as dango served with a sweet sakura sauce.
The Ogawara Cherry Blossom Festival is not as well known as other festivals in the Tohoku area but it is highly recommended you go if you can!!
