Matsushima Bay is famous for being one of Japan’s top 3 scenic views, along with Miyajima in Hiroshima and Amanohashidate in Kyoto.
If you’re making a trip to Sendai, why not pay a visit to Matsushima? It is only a 30 minute trip from Sendai, known for its attractive streetscape and delicious beef tongue.
You can go on a cruise boat around the bay, going in a loop past and through numerous islands. My boat went counter-clockwise, so I was lucky to sit at the far right side of the boat. I recommend that you sit as close to the sides as possible to get the best view.
Throughout the cruise, descriptions of the islands the boat is passing is given in Japanese and English. However, as the English is played after the Japanese, there is a bit of a delay between when the boat actually passes an island and when the English description is given.
It is a lovely relaxing tour. Although the boat is fully covered, the visibility may be compromised in rainy weather. It was quite cloudy on the day I went, but I can imagine that it would be beautiful on a sunny day.
The islands in Matsushima Bay were particularly adored by historic haiku master Matsuo Basho. You don’t have to be a history or poetry buff to enjoy it though!
