Beautiful beaches in Okinawa

The beaches in Okinawa are known as being the best in Japan. Although the main island, where Nago and Naha are located, are the most famous and draw crowds of tourists every year.

The rainy season has finally come to an end in the Tokyo area, entering into summer!

In summer all I want to do is go to the beach.

The beaches in Okinawa are known as being the best in Japan. Although the main island, where Nago and Naha are located, are the most famous and draw crowds of tourists every year.

However, Okinawa actually consists of many different islands, which are worth a visit from the mainland. In this blog I will introduce some of the beautiful beaches and sights in Ishigaki and Iriomote islands.

1. Kabira Bay (Ishigaki Island)

2

Although many people have not heard of it, Kabira bay’s beauty allowed it to be awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide.

It is known for its transparent water and pure white sand. You can go snorkelling or ride glass bottomed boats to see the marine life like coral and even clownfish.

Also, from the Kabira Bay Park observatory, you can enjoy panoramic views of the bay. Depending on the sunlight and time of day, you can see the ocean and sky changing into seven colors for a perfect photo opportunity.

2. Pinaisara Waterfall (Iriomote Island)

3

Exit the jungle overgrown with mangroves, and climb the mountain to see the Pinaisara Waterfall.

In the native language of the region, “pinaisara” means “like a beard”, referring to the shape of the waterfall when viewed from a distance. It is said to be a holy land where you can see the beard of the God of water.

Being surrounded by the untouched nature, you can feel the negative ions in the air.

Although it takes some physical fitness to get there, you will be moved by the beauty and mystery of this sight!

3. Fusaki Beach (Ishigaki Island)

4

On the left side of the beach is a beautiful pier, recommended for watching the sunset.

You can also see Iriomote and Kohama islands in the distance.

4. Banna Park (Ishigaki Island)

5

From the observatory, you can view 360 degrees of ocean from above.

You can also gaze at the sky from the observatory. If it is a clear night, the sky is filled with stars.

Out of the 88 recognized constellations in the sky, 84 of them can be seen from Ishigaki Island. This makes it the place where you can see the most stars in all of Japan!

On the roof of the observatory, you can see lights with the image of a starry sky under your feet! You can experience the feeling of being enveloped by stars from your feet upwards.

5. Barasu Island

6

Only 10-15 minutes from Iriote by boat is Barasu Island. This miraculous island is made entirely of coral!

Floating in the emerald blue sea, this uninhabited island does not even appear on maps of Japan. Snorkelling in the surrounding area is definitely recommended.

In the expanse of crystal-clear sea, you can see the tropical fish and coral together. This scenery will make you never want to leave!
