Japan’s Best Autumn Foliage 2016

Experience the beauty of Japan. Autumn has become one of the best times to visit Japan. During this time, you can see how beautifully autumn unfolds in Japan. The whole country becomes covered in the stunning colours of Autumn. The variation of autumn leaves colour will take your breath away.


The Autumn season in Japan starts from the north (Hokkaido region) and then gradually moves into lower elevations and more southern latitudes. Autumn Foliage each year varies depending on temperature and other conditions. As the Japanese archipelago stretches over 4000 km from north to south, Autumn leaves can be seen from the end of September until early December.

Early October to Mid October

Nowadays, Hokkaido has become a popular tourist destination where you can visit Hokkaido’s most famous shrine (Hokkaido-jingu) and enjoy the most popular sulfur hot-springs surfaces in the Jigokudani or “Hell Valley” in Noboribetsu town.


Having the chance to enjoy hot spring (onsen) in Autumn is possibly one of the best hot spring experiences ever.

Access: Take Limited Express train (Super Hokuto line) from Sapporo station to Noboribetsu station (70mins).


Mid October to Late October

From mid October until the end of October you will see amazing Autumn leaves around Ryuzu waterfall (龍頭滝). If you are lucky enough, you will be able to see a rainbow over the falls.


Access: Take Tobu bus from JR Tobu Nikko Station to get off at Ryuzu no taki bus stop (approximately 60 mins). The ticket price is 1,500 yen.

Edo Wonderland

Edo Wonderland is a theme park where you can enjoy life and culture of Edo period which is not too far from Nikko (World heritage site). There are many activities and shows to enjoy only one hour from Nikko station.915_kouyou2016_06


Access: Take a train from Nikko Station to Kinugawa-Onsen and then take a bus to  Edomura (approximately 20mins).

Momiji Kairo もみじ回廊 (The Walkway of Autumn Leaves)

Late October to Mid November


Momiji Kairo is situated in Yamanashi prefecture near the northern shore of lake Kawaguchiko. The walkway of Autumn leaves is the only place where you can see Autumn leaves against the majestic Mount Fuji backdrop, which has been recognized as one of the most romantic place in Japan. Moreover, you can cherish the breathtaking of illuminated maple trees along the walkway at night time.

Access: Take Retro bus from Kawaguchiko Station to get off at Kubota Itchiku Kimono Museum. Momiji Kairo is 3 minutes walk from the bus stop.

The historic villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama

Late October to Mid November


The World heritage site and the historic villages in Shirakawago and Gokayama are situated in Gifu prefecture, surrounded by gassho-style houses. This is one of the most famous tourist destinations that can be visited all year long.


 Nagoya airport or Chubu Centrair International Airport

Take a train (Meitetsu line) from Nagoya airport or Chubu Centrair International Airport to Meitetsu Nagoya station (870 yen). Then take a bus at Meitetsu bus center to Shirakawa-go (3,600 yen).


Take a bus at Takayama Nohi bus center (Platform 4) to Shirakawa-go (2,470 yen).

Kawakudari cruising at Arashiyama ,Kyoto

Mid November to Early December


When you visit Kyoto in Autumn, Kawakudari cruise allows you to enjoy the viewing of colourful Autumn foliage in Japan. This cruise is a ride down the Hozugawa river to Arashiyama near Togetsukyo bridge.


Take a train (Sagano line) from JR Kyoto station to Kameoka station (20 mins). The departure point of cruise is 8 minutes walk from Kameoka station.

Kinchakuda Higanbana fields,Saitama


If you really like flowers and want to see the flower filed in Autumn, Kinchakuda Higanbana fields is a great choice!


Take a train (Seibu-Ikebukuro line) from Ikebukuro station to Han-no station and transfer to Sei-Chichibu line to Koma station. From Koma station take a walk for 1km or take a bus from Koma station to Kinchakuda garden (550 yen).

Kochia field at Hitachi seaside Park in Ibaraki prefecture

If you visit Hitachi Seaside Park in Autumn, you will see thousands of Kochia Kochia (autumn red tint) bushes turn crimson around mid October. These bushes are spread evenly all over the field.



Take a train (Tokiwa line) from Tokyo station to Katsuta station. From East Exit/東口 take a bus to Kaihin Koen Nishiguchi (海浜公園西口) for 15 mins.

Cosmos field at Showa Kinen Park in Tokyo


At Showa Kinen park, more than 400,000 cosmos flowers bloom in mid October. This might become one of the most impressive place of your trip in Japan.

From 24th September until 3rd November 2016 there is a special event allowing you to enjoy cosmos flower picking for free.


Take a train (Chuo Line) from Shinjuku station to Tachikawa (立川) station (25mins).

Entrance fee: Adult – 410 yen, child (aged between 6-14) – 80 yen, Senior(aged 65 or above) – 210 yen

On 19th September, 23rd October and 30th October 2016, you can enter the park  for free.

Opening hours in October: From 9:30Am to 5:00PM

Opening hours in November-mid February: From 9:30Am to 4:30PM
